August is Eat Local Month

Celebrate Eat Local Month during August at Linden Hills Co-op with

education, demos, recipe ideas, and sales on local products!

August has arrived, and summer is beginning to wind down. Before it’s gone, it will leave us with an abundance of delicious, fresh, local produce. During this time, we celebrate. We fill our baskets and carts with local produce, meats, cheeses, and other locally crafted products in between. Celebrate Eat Local Month with us all throughout August with specials on local items, demos and materials to learn about local companies and their products.

Why buy local?

Environment | Because local food travels a much shorter distance to reach stores or the farmers market, the carbon footprint of local food is much smaller.

Economy | For each dollar you spend on locally grown or produced food, 45¢ of that dollar stay in the local community. Compare that to just 14¢ for each dollar spent on national brands.

Nutrients | Because local produce spends much less time in transit, and is often on shelves within 1-2 days of harvest, it retains more of its nutrients.

Flavor | Not only is local produce going to be fresher, but it's also grown seasonally, which leads to a more flavorful, much tastier product!

This year, we challenge you to eat local! Give some of these ideas a try!

•Shift $10 of your grocery spending each week from non-local to local foods.

•Challenge your family to eat at least one meal each week made with entirely local ingredients.

•Each week, find a local meat, vegetable, or cheese that you’ve never tried or heard of before, buy it and try it!

Tips for shopping local at the co-op

•Look for our local tag on shelves to easily identify items that are locally produced.

•Grab a copy of our local shopping guide in store or online. It includes all of the local products we carry, organized conveniently by department in which it can be found.
•Sign up for our e-newsletter and learn which local products are on sale each week, and also find information about local items that are new to the store.
•Be flexible, and eat seasonally. Plan meals with the local produce that is available when you shop.
